Ready or not, tho’, it is time to kick this thing off!
Monday morning dawned sunny and HOT…and Farm and Garden Day began. After a genuine farmer’s breakfast of fresh
eggs, bacon and toast with honey, we started our day with some good ole
fashioned work in the garden….watering and harvesting. BTW - the boys really liked picking the
beans….the squash, not so much….all those little “spikes” on the leaves, you
know!
They enjoyed the raspberries they
picked and even dug up some new red potatoes to go with our beans for
supper. After lunch we loaded up and
headed out. First stop was at a local
produce stand
where they browsed the merchandise
and helped me make some
purchases, before sitting down to enjoy some roasted peanuts.
Then it was on to Paul and Ann’s (friends from the Beekeepers Club) farm where we hoped to see some baby goats. We weren’t disappointed….got to see twins that were just a week old….still very skittish, but oh, so cute. The boys had the chance to run in the field with the goats and even to see one of the feinting goats stiffen up and fall over!
The next stop was at our neighbors, Elton and Judy, (they have over 100 chickens) to learn more about the different varieties of chickens
They even got to see/hold 3-day old baby chicks….I think a couple of the boys wanted to take them home!
There was a first for all….saw/held an egg with no shell….very weird!
and our very own nest of baby blue birds...
After dinner (pigs in a blanket, what else would you have on Farm Day if you're a growing boy?), we made scarecrows...they definitely should scare something!
Tuesday, our second day of camp, began with a race themed breakfast…..
but you'll have to check back to see what all the day held for our "campers",
