Alaska Adventure - Day 10, Part 1

When we awoke this morning, the ship was tied up to the pier in Skagway....and we are ready for our day which will start with a train ride on the White Pass Railroad, traversing through Alaska, across the summit and into the Yukon.  Yes, we did bring our passports, as we will have to go through customs both passing over into Canada and when we return to the U.S.

Our train ride started out on some pretty level ground.....
....but it didn't take us long to leave the port of Skagway behind and start climbing.  See those ships down there?  One of them is ours!
We passed through lots of varied and RUGGED terrain....

...and crossed many trestles (ignore the glare from the windows....we really aren't running over that man's head).

The scenery may be rugged, but it certainly is majestic....

This was the sight at the border of the U.S. and Canada....
Originally, a way station for the Northwest Mounted Police...
Shortly after we crossed over into Canada, we disembarked from the train and continued on the tour bus for the rest of our excursion.

During the Yukon gold rush, there were two trails through the pass and into the Yukon....one was named Hell, and the other Damnation, and this valley was named Tormented Valley!  I'm sure it was horrendous to travel across, but it is absolutely stunning....

I could have stayed here for hours taking photos, but the tour must go on, so only had a few minutes....

Look at that reflection!

This soothes my soul on such a deep level...God really outdid Himself here!

We finally pulled into the Suspension Bridge National Park.....and actually got our passports stamped.

I used to have an incredible fear of heights so wondered how I would do when it came to walking across this suspension bridge....
....but with beauty like this around to get (and keep) my attention?   Not a problem!

And then there's my Mr. Man, who over the years has lovingly helped me overcome that fear!

There are lots of old, well-used vehicles in this part of the world.  I guess it is too difficult and costly to get new that they take care of what they have and keep them running!
We're back on the bus and heading back to Alaska, but the beauty just doesn't stop!

And we're back.....!
We will be heading back down through the mountains with a stop for lunch and a walk through the beautiful gardens at Jewell Gardens...check back soon...our adventures for the day are not over!
