Alaska Adventure - Day 10, Part 2

For all of you who are tired of the sweeping vistas and the glaciers....well, this post is for you!
Okay, so I had to at least share ONE waterfall...especially since we didn't see very many, and they are usually so buried in the forest that you don't see them very well!
Our lunch stop today was at Jewell Gardens...what a picturesque place.
And the food was delicious, too!  We enjoyed a delicious salad, tomato basil soup, salmon quiche, rosehip tea and rhubarb crunch....most of which all came from what they grow here.   Just look at that celery...wish mine would grow like that!
Artichoke....
...and the flowers....

The grounds were very peaceful and so well maintained....
...and what a backdrop!

There is also a glass-blowing "factory" on the grounds, and there was evidence of their productivity all around...

But EVERYwhere we looked there were big, beautiful blooms...
....even the marigolds were huge!

Since I loooove gardens (i.e., Biltmore, etc.) I was thoroughly enjoying myself...

There was a model train that ran throughout the grounds...

....and meandering boardwalks...

If only our garden was this lush and productive!
The tour bus dropped us off in the little town of Skagway, which is trying to stay true to the feel of the era of the Klondike gold Rush...

...complete with totems....
...and boardwalks for sidewalks....

The front of this Alaska Brotherhood building is completely covered in driftwood!
This is supposed to be one of the main attractions in town, but we didn't feel like waiting in the long line just to get inside...

An old steam locomotive and......a snow remover!

As we made our way back to the pier, we passed through a small park where we noticed a lot of activity in the water....yes, those are salmon!  They have come here to spawn, and it was fascinating to watch them.  They are very territorial and are constantly chasing other salmon away from the area they have chosen....

It's been a loooong day, and we are ready to get a little break before dinner...tomorrow we port in Juneau and whale watching is on the schedule!
